The Cancer Prevention Research Cluster

Cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada - one in every two Canadians will receive a cancer diagnosis. Despite improvements in treatments, these trends will remain as the Canadian population ages. Given the large scale of the cancer burden, cancer control must move beyond treatment to emphasize prevention. The Cancer Prevention Research Cluster (CPRC) is a transdisciplinary research group that will work to:

  • Create a network of researchers, practitioners and stakeholders to enhance the landscape of cancer prevention in BC and beyond;

  • Conduct interdisciplinary research to generate cancer prevention evidence, moving evidence into policy and practice;

  • Focus cancer prevention on priority populations to reduce cancer inequities.

The CPRC would like to acknowledge that the land on which we are conducting our work is the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam) People.

OUR RESEARCH PILLARS

Indigenous Health and Wellness

The Indigenous Health and Wellness pillar will investigate how to make cancer prevention more equitable, accessible, and culturally safe for Indigenous communities.

HEALTHY CITIES, THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT, AND ENVIRONMENTAL EQUITY

The Healthy Cities, The Built Environment, and Environmental Equity pillar seeks to understand cancer in a changing environment impacted by climate change and other environmental factors.

OCCUPATIONAL CANCER PREVENTION

The Occupational Cancer Prevention pillar will focus on researching and implementing preventative measures to reduce carcinogenic exposures for large sections of the population, including critical risk groups, such as young workers, and women of child-bearing age.

LIFESTYLE BEHAVIOURS AND CANCER RISK

The Lifestyle Behaviours and Cancer Risk pillar will focus on research that spans the major cancer behavioural risk factors, including diet, physical activity, obesity, tobacco, as well as occupational and environmental exposures.

PERSONALIZED CANCER PREVENTION

The Personalized Cancer Prevention pillar will incorporate molecular and genetic cancer epidemiology research within the context of the various social-environmental determinants of health.

INFECTIOUS DISEASES AND CANCER

The Infectious Disease and Cancer pillar will explore the intricate role of infections in cancer initiation and progression.
